I hope someone can help me.

I hope someone can help me. I'm new to the character & so far I only know <3.
When you see the numbers in the box for a symbol, it tells me to hold down alt & type in the numbers using the ten-key pad. Yet I am not getting the symbol. What am I doing wrong. I am trying to get a cross symbol.
